With the growing importance of recycling and environmental awareness upon us, a new go green movement is taking shape. More and more people are choosing to live a more eco-sensitive lifestyle and are actively making decisions that reflect this movement.

Consumers are also looking for products with minimal environmental impact. Being informed and knowledgeable is the first step towards making environmentally conscious choices that are right for you.

Common Environmental Terms:

  • Recyclable: Return the bags to any recycling collection point for complete re-use.
  • Degradable/Biodegradable: Bags have an additive that is used to allow the bags to degrade within 18 months.
  • Compostable: Bags are designed to be biodegradable for markets requiring biodegradability in a composting environment.

The choice between paper and plastic can be a difficult one. The good news is both have different benefits for the environment. Both are available made from recycled materials and can be recycled themselves.

The Benefits of Paper:

  • 100% reusable, recyclable and biodegradable
  • Hold many items, which means fewer bags to handle
  • A renewable resource - comes from trees
  • Easy to carry
  • Compostable

The Benefits of Plastic:

  • 100% reusable, recyclable
  • Strong and convenient to carry
  • Light weight and inexpensive
  • Waterproof protection for items

A noteworthy biodegradable product is Corn Plastic. Corn Plastic is made from corn, is a renewable source and has a smaller packaging footprint. Corn Plastic completely breaks down over time. This is one of the many ways we can take small steps to create big changes!

Environmentally Friendly Tips:

  • Reuse paper or plastic bags when shopping.
  • Reusable sturdy cardboard boxes or strong cloth bags will also help reduce waste.
  • Buy products made from recycled materials.
  • Offer customers a reusable tote bag to bring with them each time they shop.
  • Select products that use less packaging
  • Imprint bags with water based or other environmentally friendly inks
  • Turn off your computers when you leave the office saves energy.
  • Don’t run the water when brushing your teeth.
  • Replace light bulbs with CFLS light bulbs that use less energy. If every American changes just one light bulb to CFLS, we save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes a year and present greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.
  • Go paperless when possible(send the documents via email)
  • Print on both sides of paper when possible.
  • Carpool
